BARNES EARNS DICK WEBER PLAYOFFS CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND BERTH

April 10, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS - Hoping to bookend his 2010-11 season with Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titles, Chris Barnes advanced to the April 17 championship round of the PBA Dick Weber Playoffs by winning the Southwest Conference Championship with the help of his Columbia 300 Pure Physics and World Beater.

Barnes, who opened the season with a PBA World Championship win in Las Vegas to become the sixth player to win PBA’s Triple Crown, defeated Jason Belmonte in the Southwest Conference match, 260-199, in a match that aired Sunday on ESPN.

“The Pure Physics worked well at the start of the game because it has a higher RG and stronger cover that enabled me to change direction and still get a smoother overall roll,” said the 13-time Tour titlist from Double Oak, Texas.  “The left lane was a little tricky. I like the fact that I could make the adjustment with the Pure Physics and be confident in its reaction.

“When the match started I was kind of in between two balls,” he added. “Toward the end second half of the game, I changed to a World Beater because the ball has a higher flare characteristic which ensured I could get it back to the pocket.

“The first time around, the right lane was kinda tricky,” Barnes said, referring to the Regional Championship round when his 217 was enough to eliminate Lonnie Waliczek (201) and Lennie Boresch Jr. (177). “This time, the left lane had a ton of hang down lane and I finally figured it out late in practice. I moved left and got away from it, but I thought 220, 230 would be good, even though I was playing Belmo.

“I threw 12 shots in the pocket, but it was hard to get the ball through the pins on the left lane. But I made a little adjustment and it worked, and from that point on, I didn’t have too much trouble.”

The inaugural Dick Weber PBA Playoffs began as a six-tournaments-in-one event, featuring six regional groups bowling elimination rounds within their respective regions.

On Sunday, April 17, the Dick Weber Playoffs will conclude with championship matches to be televised live at 1 p.m. Eastern from Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. In the opening match, Barnes will compete against two-time Tour titlist Dick Allen and Randy Weiss, a 10-time PBA Regional title winner who is looking for his first Tour title. The lowest score in that match will be eliminated.

The two survivors will then bowl a “best of two games” match for the $50,000 first prize. In one player wins both games, he’ll win the title. If the two players split, they will bowl a one-ball roll-off to decide the championship.
