HOPKINSVILLE, Kent. – For the second consecutive year, Columbia 300 staff member Chris Barnes has taken home the title at the Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator PBA Tour event and says he owes his success to his not-so-secret weapon – the Power Swing.
“With the additional flare and the great cover, the Power Swing has proven to be one of those benchmark type balls that I have been able to use every week because of it’s versatility,” said Chris Barnes, who has won one title in each of the past nine Tour seasons. “With a little polish or a little Abralon® or, like Sunday, straight out of the box, Power Swing has performed for me on multiple patterns with success.”
Barnes, a resident of Double Oak, Texas, and reigning PBA Tour Player of the Year, threw a 235 game to set himself up for the title match against his friend and Tour roommate, Mika Koivuniemi. In the final match, Barnes used two Power Swing balls exclusively. On the longer Scorpion pattern (left), he had a 5 inch pin with the CG at three inches from the axis and the hole one inch short of his axis. He sanded the ball with 2000-grit Abralon. On the right side and shorter Viper pattern, Barnes said, “I drilled it for the show,” using a new Power Swing straight out of the box and drilled with a six inch pin and no hole.
Since the introduction of the Power Swing, Barnes has made five of eight shows using his arsenal of Columbia 300 products to its greatest advantage. Brand manager Chad Murphy said, “Chris is on an incredible roll right now. Making three shows in a row and four of the last five shows using a plastic ball, Momentum Swing, Power Swing and Resurgence says a lot about the options our brand has available for consumers bowling on any lane condition. Columbia 300 has a ball for literally any competitive circumstance.
“This title is especially meaningful to us since Don Johnson was the face of our brand for so many years. Many bowlers recognize Don as the man who put Columbia 300 on the map and we are honored to have this title remain in the family.”
With this win, Barnes takes home $25,000 and is now ranked third in the point system race for Player of the Year for the 2008-2009 season.
