INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Thirteen-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour titlist Chris Barnes moved one step closer to the PBA Dick Weber Playoffs title by winning the Lucas Oil West/Northwest Region Championship at Woodland Bowl. The West/Northwest Region finals aired Sunday on ESPN with Columbia equipment.
Barnes, who won the 2010 PBA World Championship for his third major and the final leg in the PBA Triple Crown, defeated Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis. (177) and former Wichita State University teammate Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita, Kan. (201) with a 217 in the three-player final match to advance to the conference championships to be televised on ESPN Sunday April 10.
The Double Oak, Texas, resident was “seeded” into the West/Northwest Region based upon his No. 4 ranking on the 2010-11 PBA Tour competition points list.
“When you’re bowling on TV, the format and who you’re bowling against have a lot to do with your ball selection,” Barnes said. “After analyzing the situation for the regional round, I decided to go with the Outburst because it’s a low RG symmetrical ball that has a predictable roll and a strong cover.
“When the lane conditions are choppy like they can often be for a TV show, you want something that will even out those inconsistencies and still be able to control the pocket. With this ball under these conditions, I was able to move left and still get a smooth arc to the pocket.”
The inaugural PBA Playoffs began as a six-tournaments-in-one event, featuring six regional groups bowling elimination rounds with their respective regions. The winners of each regional match advance to the Conference Championships to be televised on ESPN Sunday, April 10.
In the Conference Championships, Barnes will bowl a one-game match against Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte for a berth in the championship round. Barnes is the only surviving player in the inaugural Dick Weber PBA Playoffs with a chance to win two titles during the 2010-11 season. The PBA Playoffs is the final tournament on the PBA Tour schedule.
The three Conference Championship winners will return to Woodland Bowl on Sunday, April 17, to battle for the PBA Playoffs title in a live ESPN telecast at 1 p.m. Eastern. The winner takes home a $50,000 first prize.
