SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A day after Team USA and Hammer Pro Staffer Bill O’Neill broke the singles record, his teammates Team Columbia’s Chris Barnes and Team Ebonite’s Tommy Jones smashed the doubles record at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships.
Barnes and Jones combined to shoot 2,788 on the first of three squads Wednesday morning and held on throughout the day to win the title at Carolina Bowling Center.
Jones led the duo with 1,404 for six games, an average of 234, while Barnes totaled 1,384, an average of 230.67. Their total broke the previous record of 2,709, set by Mexico’s Victor Mar and Vicente Mendez in 1989.
“We are really pleased with how we performed, especially since the lanes played completely different today than they did in the practice session a couple days ago,” Barnes said. “We came in with a strategy and had to change that quite a bit. We could have given away a lot of pins, but we changed our strategy.”
Barnes and Jones used a huge final game of 536 to push their score over the record mark. Jones closed with 279, while Barnes added 257.
“It was a huge advantage for Tommy and I to get to bowl together,” Barnes said. “We see the lane very similarly, and we both had a very clear picture of what was going on. We talked our way through everything today.”
Chris is rolling right along into the fall. He had a great summer helping his team to a win in the PBA’s summer series with a clutch strike in the tenth and followed that by moving on and winning the PBA Lumber Leader competition up in Detroit by knocking down more pins then all the exempt pros over the seven events. The Pan American Games was the next stop and yet another win. With help from Tommy this week he again proved he’s one of the best in the game not only in the US but around the world.
“We are excited and very happy for Chris,” stated Columbia 300 Brand Manager Chad Murphy. “He’s an individual talent but it’s fun to watch him having success in these team competitions. It’s why he’s such a good fit for our brand. The Columbia 300 brand has always been about being competitive whether bowling in a league setting, in a more social environment or on the weekends as an individual; and it’s nice that he and Tommy kept it in the family here with the win.”
Barnes is also currently in second place in the all events competition behind Hammer’s Bill O’Neill. Competition continues Thursday with trios at the games where Barnes and two others will go for another Gold medal.
