COLUMBIA 300 FULL SWING ALMOST PROPELS SCROGGINS TO BACK-TO-BACK LUMBER LIQUIDATORS U.S. OPEN TITLES

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – With a lot of help from his Columbia 300 Full Swing, Mike Scroggins got within 10 frames of becoming the second player in modern U.S. Open history to win back-to-back titles.

But in the end, he said, it was a piece of tape that may have been the reason for his second-place finish.

“If I can stay with one ball for an entire tournament, I will,” the soft-spoken Amarillo, Texas left-hander said, “and the Full Swing gave me the flexibility I needed this week. That’s why it was a good choice for me.

“I really felt comfortable with it in match play because it was easy to adapt to the changing lane conditions from pair to pair. The Full Swing is a hooking ball which was great for me because the lanes played tighter for me for most of the tournament. It helped me win the No. 1 seed for the TV finals.”

Scroggins lost in the championship match to Bill O’Neill, 267-207, but he wasn’t second-guessing his ball choice. He was more upset over his own decision in managing his grip.

“At the start of the match, my thumb shrunk just a bit and I was afraid to add a piece of tape because I didn’t want to hang up in the ball,” Scroggins said. “I was losing it just enough that I couldn’t get to the pocket. So when I put the tape in the ball in the seventh frame, I got the pocket back and I was able to strike. By then it was too late.

“But it’s hard to beat 267 on an easy condition, let alone the U.S. Open oil pattern.”

Scroggins won his seventh PBA Tour title by capturing the Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open presented by USBC in Wichita, Kan., in December and also had a fourth-place finish in the recent USBC Masters.
