Columbia 300 Pro Staff member Wendy Macpherson used the Columbia 300 Outburst to make a strong showing at the 2011 United States Bowling Congress Queens Tournament April 28th.
Macpherson, a USBC Hall of Famer from Henderson, Nev., needed seven matches, including three in the loser’s bracket, to qualify for the television finals at the OnCenter in Syracuse, N.Y.
After qualifying third for double-elimination match play, Macpherson won three straight matches in the winner’s bracket. Macpherson defeated Amanda Johnson, 611-573, fellow Columbia 300 staffer Lynda Barnes, 654-616, and Jacqui Reese, 747-571.
Her road to the TV finals got tougher after a 685-652 loss against Kim Terrell-Kearney moved her to the “Contender’s” bracket.
It was there that Macpherson showed her mettle, rolling past former Queens titlists Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, 771-653 and Liz Johnson, 696-694. Macpherson’s 733-664 victory over Shannon O’Keefe made her the lone survivor in the “Contender’s” bracket, and the No. 5 seed for the ESPN-2 televised finals.
Macpherson took to the TV lanes attempting to break a tie with USBC Hall of Famer Millie (Ignizio) Martorella as the only three-time Queens champions. Macpherson had won the Queens in 1988, 2000 and 2003.
Standing in Macpherson’s way was No. 4 seed Cathy Dorin-Lizzi. The match began with Macpherson leaving three splits in the first five frames, a 7-10, a 2-8-10 and a 4-6-7.
A ball switch from a pin-up Columbia Outburst to a pin-down Outburst gave Macpherson a better look to the pocket, and put her in a position to double in the 10th frame to win. Unfortunately a light hit produced a 5-pin leave giving Dorin-Lizzi a 180-168 decision and ending Macpherson’s shot at a 4th Queens title.
“I had a great week of bowling,” said Macpherson on her Facebook page. “I would also like to thank Columbia 300 and Bugsy Kelly for their continued support.”
