Huskers, ‘Dores in battle for title

With the national championship on the horizon, No. 1 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores and No. 2 ranked Nebraska are neck-in-neck in the race for the title.

The University of Nebraska bowling team edged that much closer March 1 in the Holiday Classic tournament in Birmingham, Ala.

The Huskers pulled off the win with 11,993 pins; the Commodores came in at 11,713.

The two-day event Feb. 28-March 1 was a nail-biter with the 2007 National Champion ’Dores ending the first day with a 279 pin lead.

Both teams have a rich and successful history on the lanes. The Huskers won the first national championship in 2004; the school repeated its title in 2005.

In 2007, the Vandy bowling team made history by bringing home the university’s first national championship title in any sport.

With five weeks until the tournament, to be held at Super Bowl Lanes of Canton in Canton, Mich., both teams are looking for a way to find the sweet spot at every turn — something harder for women bowlers.

“It is pretty easy to find a ball that will glide to the hook-spot and it is pretty easy to find a ball powerful enough to minimize deflection,” said Huskers Coach Bill Straub. “The real trick is to find a ball to overcome each need.”

And as proven throughout history — with everything from fire to cars — the feat will always be something bigger and better.

“We have all the confidence in the world that our product can produce the results the bowler wants, when the bowler wants it, male or female,” Columbia 300 Brand Manager Chad Murphy said. “We have had a long standing relationship with both of these great schools and its nice to see them having a success.

“At Columbia 300 nothing is impossible,” Murphy said.
