RUSSELL’S DRAMATIC VICTORY IN GERMANY FINALIZES BARBASOL PBA TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS FIELD

INDIANAPOLIS (March 25, 2013) – Indianapolis area native Ronnie Russell waited until the last possible event, but ended a 10-year quest to win his first Professional Bowlers Association Tour title Sunday in Munich, Germany, and today is heading home, ready to bowl in the PBA’s signature tournament for the first time.

Russell’s 224-210 victory over Sweden’s James Gruffman in the Brunswick Euro Challenge Sunday qualified him for the exclusive field of 48 PBA Tour champions and five past TOC winners who will begin competition in the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions Wednesday at Woodland Bowl on Indianapolis’ north side. While Woodland Bowl has hosted almost every major PBA Tour major championship event over the years, it will host the TOC for the first time.

The only previous time the Tournament of Champions was held in Indianapolis was the very first event in 1962. That tournament, won by the late PBA Hall of Famer Joe Joseph, was held at Play Bowl – a bowling center that no longer exists.

The 2013 TOC begins with eight-round qualifying squads for all players on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. After a third eight-game qualifying round Thursday at 10 a.m., the top 24 players based on 24-game pinfall totals will advance to round-robin match play. Match play rounds will be held Thursday at 5 p.m., and Friday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. After a total of 48 games, the top five players will advance to Sunday’s live ESPN stepladder finals at 2:30 p.m. ET.

At stake is a $50,000 first prize and the PBA’s third major championship of the 2012-13 season.

As part of Tournament of Champions week, the PBA will host its Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Indianapolis Marriott North, when Doug Kent of Newark, N.Y., and Danny Wiseman of Baltimore, will join the ranks of the PBA’s greatest players.

All qualifying and match play rounds of the Tournament of Champions (and the PBA Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Saturday night) will be covered live, exclusively on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. For subscription information, visit pba.com.

Following Sunday’s live TOC finals, the PBA will conduct its inaugural PBA League Elias Cup finals at 6 p.m. The four teams that earned the most points during a five-round qualifying series in Detroit in January – the New York City WTT KingPins led by franchise player Pete Weber and owned by Billie Jean King, the Motown Muscle led by franchise player Mike Fagan and owned by Jerome Bettis, the BROOKLYN STyLES led by franchise player Sean Rash and owned by Jesse Williams and the Dallas Strikers led by franchise player Norm Duke and owned by Terrell Owens – will bowl for the first Elias Cup title and a team prize of $76,000. The Elias Cup finals will air on ESPN on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. ET.

NEW YORK CITY WTT KINGPINS EARN TOP BERTH FOR PBA LEAGUE ELIAS CUP FINALS

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – L.A. X, a team of Professional Bowlers Association stars owned by Los Angeles Clippers all-star guard Chris Paul, struck on seven of its first eight shots to build an insurmountable lead over the top qualifiers, Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers, to win the PBA League Anthony round, 257-214, but it wasn’t enough to earn the team a berth in the PBA League Elias Cup finals.

L.A. X made its ESPN debut in the fifth and final qualifying round of PBA League competition, but missed the Elias Cup finals by two points. The Anthony team round aired Sunday on ESPN.

“It was a game of near misses for us all week,” L.A. X franchise player Jason Belmonte said. “We felt like there was always one game that seemed to get away from us, even in qualifying. The same thing was happening to us in the Clash eliminator rounds.

“I’m always the optimist, so I figured if we got on the main show, we’d take it and today we did. The guys bowled awesome. I’m really proud of them,” he added. “We moved up to fifth in the Elias Cup standings, but we still missed the finals. It was another near miss.”

L.A. X advanced to the Anthony round finals with a 207-206 victory over Chris Hardwick’s Silver Lake Atom Splitters. After L.A. X’s Dave Wodka missed a 10 pin in the eighth frame to give Silver Lake a 10-pin lead, Belmonte struck in the ninth and anchor Parker Bohn III threw three strikes in the 10th frame to put L.A. X back in front. Needing three strikes in his 10th frame to win by one pin, Silver Lake’s Chris Barnes threw two strikes, but left the 4-7 standing on his final shot. The Atom Splitters needed to win the Anthony round to advance to the Elias Cup finals by two points over the Dallas Strikers.

In the opening team match, Silver Lake was nearly perfect in running away with a 279-215 victory over Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle. The only flaw in Silver Lake’s 11-strike performance was a 10 pin left by Dom Barrett in the fourth frame, which he converted.

The New York City WTT KingPins, owned by women’s sports legend Billie Jean King, earned the top stepladder berth for the PBA League Elias Cup finals by winning two qualifying rounds during the PBA Detroit Winter Swing and compiling 45 points to out-distance Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle by seven points. The BROOKLYN STyLES, owned by actor Jesse Williams, captured the No. 3 berth in the Elias Cup finals thanks to their win in the opening round. The STyLES will meet the Dallas Strikers in the Elias Cup opening match. Dallas claimed the final berth in the finals thanks to its second-place finish in the Anthony round.

PBA competition resumes with the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions and PBA League Elias Cup finals next week at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. The two-hour Tournament of Champions finals will air live on ESPN next Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET and the Elias Cup finals will air on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. ET.

SUNDAY ON ESPN: Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship, PBA League Round 5

CLICK FOR PREVIEW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4dGTtpol4k

Event: PBA Detroit Winter Swing

Tournament: Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship title match and fifth and final PBA League qualifying round to determine finalists for PBA League Elias Cup finals.

Where: Thunderbowl Lanes, Allen Park, Mich.

Format: Baker team stepladder finals for PBA League round; head-to-head singles match for Earl Anthony Players Championship.

Television: ESPN (Sunday at 1 p.m. ET)

Sunday’s telecast will begin with the PBA League Clash eliminator round where 11 players will compete in a one-ball, low-man-out competition. Rounds continue until one survivor remains; his team then becomes the No. 4 team in the PBA League stepladder final.

In the Clash eliminator round fourth-place Silver Lake Atom Splitters will have four players in the Clash field, the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits will have three, the Brooklyn STyLES two and the New York City WTT KingPins and Philadelphia Hitmen one each.

The winner of the Clash round will then bowl the opening Baker team match against Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle (Mike Fagan, Tom Smallwood, Mike Scroggins, Ronnie Russell and Jesse Buss).

The match one winner advances to meet Chris Paul’s L.A. X (Jason Belmonte, Wes Malott, Andres Gomez, Parker Bohn III and Dave Wodka) in the semifinal.  The semifinal winner will challenge the qualifying leader, Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers (Norm Duke, Amleto Monacelli, Rhino Page, Bryon Smith and Mike Machuga).

The Atom Splitters or the Philadelphia Hitmen have a chance to knock out the Strikers for the fourth spot for the Elias Cup Finals. Those teams will have their work cut out for them however as they will need to defeat Dallas in the stepladder finals of the Earl Anthony Round. But to do that, a representative of these teams team will have to win the Clash Round just to gain the No. 4 spot in the stepladder.

The KingPins, the STyLES and Muscle have already secured their spots in Indy while L.A X and Pittsburgh have been mathematically eliminated from advancing. After four rounds of PBA League competition, the KingPins lead with 44 points followed by Motown Muscle and BROOKLYN STyLES tied at 33, Dallas Strikers, 20, Philadelphia Hitmen, and Silver Lake Atom Splitters, 18, L.A. X, 14 and Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits, 6.

The top four teams will advance to the Elias Cup finals. Points available in the qualifying round include 12 to the winner, 8 for second place, 6 for third place, 5 for fourth and 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the final four places.

The Elias Cup, named in honor of PBA founder Eddie Elias, will be contested at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis on March 31 following the live telecast of the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions stepladder finals, and will air on Sunday, April 7 at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Concluding Sunday’s two-hour telecast will be the Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship title match between two-time PBA Tour titlist Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Calif., and reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.

RASH, NORTON TO BATTLE FOR EARL ANTHONY PBA PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Jan. 25, 2013) – Reigning Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., will meet two-time PBA Tour champion Scott Norton of Mission Viejo, Calif., for the championship in the Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship, the final event of the Detroit Winter Swing.

Rash will be trying for his sixth career title and first of the 2012-13 season after averaging 238.20 over 32 games of qualifying on four different lane conditions, followed by the nine-game round robin match play final round Friday night at Thunderbowl Lanes. Rash finished with 9,976 pins for 41 games to nip Norton by two pins for the top qualifying position.

Norton, the 2010-11 PBA Rookie of the Year, won his second career title in the PBA Chameleon Championship earlier in the season during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling.

“I did alright,” Rash said. “I bowl with a lot of confidence, which is why some guys don’t like me, but I’m just trying to stay in the moment and make good shots.  I’ve been on a tear since the last World Series was held here (in 2009). My goal is to just keep making TV shows and give myself chances to win.

“I made some mistakes the second day here. I was in the show with two games to go and let some negative thoughts get to me, but I learned from them, and that’s why I made the show today. Unfortunately, you lose more times than you win, but you have to just keep giving yourself chances and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

The Detroit Winter Swing has included a series of four singles tournaments and five PBA League qualifying events, the first five-player team competition in the PBA’s 53-year history, and Rash has been a leader in both types of competition.

Earlier Friday, Rash helped his BROOKLYN STyLES team (Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y.; Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., and Jason Sterner of McDonough, Ga.) lock up the No. 1 stepladder position for the debut of PBA League competition, live on ESPN Sunday at noon ET. The STyLES posted a combined 160-game total of 36,403 pins after four rounds of qualifying on lane conditioning patterns named after PBA legends Carmen Salvino, Mark Roth, Don Carter and Earl Anthony.

“It feels great,” Rash said. “Our team was extremely consistent all week. All five guys contributed, like I thought they would when I drafted them. Everyone picked up the other guys when they needed to. It’ll be fun to be on TV as a team.”

The BROOKLYN STyLES team is owned by Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams. Also qualifying for Sunday’s PBA League debut on ESPN were the New York City WTT KingPins, owned by women’s sports legend Billie Jean King and captained by PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber; the Motown Muscle, owned by Detroit native and former Pittsburgh Steelers star Jerome Bettis and captained by Mike Fagan of Dallas; Chris Barnes and his Silver Lake (Calif.) Atom Splitters, owned by comedian Chris Hardwick, and PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke’s Dallas Strikers, owned by NFL all-pro receiver Terrell Owens.

Duke’s Dallas Strikers rallied to claim the fifth berth by 10 pins over L.A. X, owned by NBA all-star Chris Paul and captained by Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte, after finishing eighth, seventh and seventh in the first three qualifying rounds.

“After a total of 160 games, the difference between making it or not came down to one open frame, or one spare,” Duke said. “Team-wise, we struggled the first three days, but we ground it out. We knew we had to have a great day today and we did it.”

The Dallas Strikers also led qualifying in Friday’s eight-game Anthony team round by 123 pins over L.A. X (owned by NBA star Chris Paul and captained by Australia’s Jason Belmonte) to earn the top stepladder position for the fifth and final PBA League qualifying telecast prior to the Elias Cup finals on March 31 in Indianapolis. The Motown Muscle earned the third stepladder berth in the Anthony round, which will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Thunderbowl for delayed telecast on ESPN on March 24.
