NEW YORK CITY WTT KINGPINS GO ON STRIKE BINGE TO WIN PBA LEAGUE DON CARTER ROUND

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The New York City WTT KingPins’ Tommy Jones, Jack Jurek, Pete Weber, Scott Norton and John Szczerbinski struck on eight of their first nine shots to run away from Jesse Williams’ BROOKLYN STyLES, 243-199, in the title match of the PBA League Don Carter round at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The PBA League Carter round finals, and the championship match of the Don Carter Classic, aired Sunday on ESPN.

The KingPins, owned by women’s sports legend Billie Jean King, clinched a berth in the inaugural PBA League Elias Cup Finals with their win in the Carter round. The top four of eight PBA League teams, based upon points earned in five preliminary rounds, will compete for the first PBA League championship on Sunday, March 31, at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis as part of Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions week. The Elias Cup Finals will air on ESPN on April 7 at 1 p.m. ET.

“I think I’m liking my team a lot,” KingPins franchise player Pete Weber beamed after making a surprise lineup change that worked to his team’s advantage. He moved Norton, a left-hander who had been a dominant player in previous PBA League rounds, to the No. 4 position in the lineup and he placed Team USA member and former Wichita State collegiate star John Szczerbinski in the anchor position.

“I know Scott was bowling well (in the anchor position), but Szczerbinski averaged 257 on the Don Carter lane condition in qualifying, so I talked it over with the team and they all agreed to make the change and have John bowl anchor,” Weber said. “It isn’t me; this is our whole team agreeing to what we’re doing. After every shot we communicate and try to help each other.

“I have all the confidence in the world in all of my players. We got a few breaks, but without breaks you don’t win. Tomorrow we might not get them, but today we did and we took advantage of them.”

In the semifinal match between the KingPins, who won the Salvino round earlier in the PBA League series, and the Roth round-winning Motown Muscle, neither team put together consecutive strikes until the KingPins started a string of seven strikes in the sixth frame to run away with a 249-192 win.

In the opening match, owner Jerome Bettis’ Motown team got a string of four strikes from Tom Smallwood, Mike Scroggins, Ronnie Russell and Mike Fagan to take the lead, and they held on for a 210-199 victory over Chris Hardwick’s Silver Lake Atom Splitters when Silver Lake anchor Chris Barnes was unable to double in the 10th frame.

With their second PBA League stepladder win, the KingPins have earned 44 points to lock up no worse than the No. 2 stepladder position for the Elias Cup finals. The PBA League Anthony round – the final qualifying round heading into the Elias Cup finals - will include Terrell Owens’ Dallas Strikers, Chris Paul’s L.A. X, Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle and a fourth team that will advance from the Clash eliminator round. The Anthony round and the championship match of the Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship between top qualifier Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., and Norton will air on ESPN on Sunday, March 24, at 1 p.m. ET.

FAGAN, PARKIN ON TOP OF WORLD BOWLING TOUR POINTS LIST

ARLINGTON, Texas - Team USA members Mike Fagan and Missy Parkin lead the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Bowling Tour points list after the recently concluded United States Bowling Congress Masters.

The World Bowling Tour is made up of various events around the world and players earn points based on how they finish in each event. The current points system is based on a continuous two-year cycle, so points include some events from 2011 and all events from 2012.

Although Fagan did not earn any points at the USBC Masters, which awarded double points as a major, he leads with 444 points. Sean Rash of the United States picked up 24 points at the Masters and is second with 437 points, while Mika Koivuniemi of Finland is third with 428 points.

Jason Belmonte of Australia went undefeated in match play to win the Masters and earn the maximum 100 points. He now sits in fourth place overall with 411 points.

Parkin was the top finisher among the women at the Masters, earning 100 points to boost her total to 506. Kelly Kulick of the United States is second with 484 points, while Liz Johnson of the United States is third with 365 points.

The next event on the World Bowling Tour schedule is the Kuwait Open. The event will take place March 13-17 at Cozmo Bowling Center in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

The Kuwait Open will be immediately followed by the Brunswick Euro Challenge from March 19-24 at Dream Bowl Palace in Munich, Germany.

WTBA has also announced the addition of the 2013 It’s Daejeon International Open to the World Bowling Tour schedule. The major event will be held in Daejeon, South Korea, from July 7-13.

“Competitive bowling is very popular in Korea, and it is a pleasure to welcome the 2013 It’s Daejeon International Open to the schedule,” WTBA President Kevin Dornberger said. “The World Bowling Tour continues to grow at a steady pace, and we look forward to continued growth in the future.”

The mayor of Daejeon Metropolitan City, Hong-chul Yum, looks forward to welcoming the World Bowling Tour.

“Daejeon Metropolitan City is a world-class city of science and technology, located in the center of the Republic of Korea,” Hong-chul Yum said. “It is the city of festival, culture, art and sports, offering rich attractions, entertainments and dining. We gladly invite you to the beautiful Daejeon City. Visit Daejeon this coming July, enjoy nice games with world-class bowlers, and return with happy memories.”

STERNER, WILLIAMS LEAD BROOKLYN STYLES TO NO. 1 BERTH IN PBA LEAGUE DON CARTER QUALIFYING ROUND

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (Jan. 24, 2013) – The BROOKLYN STyLES, sparked by No. 5 draft pick Jason Sterner of McDonough, Ga., and PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., captured the top stepladder position in the Professional Bowlers Association League’s Don Carter qualifying round Thursday, and held a modest 28-pin lead over the New York City WTT KingPins for the overall standings heading into Friday’s final qualifying round.

The BROOKLYN STyLES, owned by Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams, finished Thursday’s Carter round with a five-player, eight-game total of 9,527 pins to earn the No. 1 position in the stepladder finals by 247 pins over the KingPins, a team owned by women’s sports icon Billie Jean King. Comedian Chris Hardwick’s Silver Lake (Calif.) Atom Splitters qualified third in the Carter round.

In the battle for the five positions in the Thunderbowl Finals round, which will air live on ESPN Sunday at noon ET, the STyLES advanced from third to first with a total of 27,274 pins for a combined total of 120 games bowled by the five team members – a team average of 227.28. The KingPins moved into second place with 27,246 pins while the previous leader, Jerome Bettis’ Motown Muscle, dropped into third place.

The top five teams for Sunday’s team stepladder finals will be decided after another eight-game round of qualifying during the Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship Friday morning.
“It’s fun bowling in team competition because, if you have a bad game, other guys can pick you up,” said BROOKLYN STyLES team leader Sean Rash, the reigning PBA Player of the Year. “It’s nice to have support from your peers, which you don’t often get in singles.”

Rash’s team got a big lift Thursday from Sterner, a non-title winner who was picked by Rash in the fifth round of the PBA League draft in November, who averaged 252.63 Thursday, third-best in the Don Carter Classic individual competition. Williams, the winningest player in PBA history with 47 PBA Tour titles, was right behind with 1,950 pins and four-time Tour winner Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., added 1,946 pins. Rash (1,817) and Ryan Ciminelli (1,793) rounded out the STyLES’ total.

“Everyone knows I watch scores around me more than I need to,” Rash said. “It’s a bad habit of mine, but Walter Ray was only a couple of lanes away, and my wife and parents were keeping track of what the other guys were doing, so I was just trying to keep everyone motivated.

“At the end of the day we’re all out here to compete for the singles titles,” Rash said, “but the team is a bonus, and I’m definitely looking forward to having our team make it to the live TV show on Sunday.”

PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber just hopes Rash’s team qualifies second. Weber, who leads the KingPins, is new to the team aspect, but is enjoying it.

“(My wife) Tracy is kind of keeping all of us informed, and I’m watching as scores are being posted,” Weber said of the PBA League race. “Even though singles means a little more to me, my mind is still focused on bowling the best I can for the team. Even if you’re having a bad game, you’re trying to trying to bowl the best you can for the team.

“I’m enjoying it,” he grinned. “We have qualified for three TV shows as a team, and we’re pretty much locked into the live show Sunday. But right now we’re second, and you always want to be No. 1.”

Also Thursday, former Wichita State University collegiate star John Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda, N.Y., led the Don Carter Classic eight-game qualifying round with 2,060 pins. The top 16 individuals advanced to a nine-game match play round Thursday night to determine the top two players who will bowl for the Don Carter Classic title.

The PBA League Carter round stepladder finals and the Don Carter Classic championship match will be contested on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Thunderbowl Lanes. The finals will air on ESPN on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. ET.

The final round of qualifying events in the Detroit Winter Swing is set for Friday when the final eight games of Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship qualifying will determine the 16 players who will advance to the match play finals in that event. The Anthony qualifying round also will include the fourth and final round of PBA League qualifying.

All preliminary rounds of Winter Swing competition are being covered live, exclusively on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. To subscribe to Xtra Frame, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.

“I made the right moves, I bowled well but I was also pretty lucky,” said Palermaa, a three-time PBA Tour winner. “With this format, it is good to get ahead early because you don’t have to chase the cut number. From here, it’s just about filling frames.”

Ciminelli surged in the final game, shooting 279 to take a piece of the lead. He started the day with 234, 279, 245 and 209.

“I watched the lefties bowl well on the first squad, so I felt like I had to go out and get a big number,” said Ciminelli, who has one PBA Tour title. “I made the right ball change at the right time today. Now I have to figure out a way to stay in that five-to-10 board zone.”

Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla., sits in third with 1,244, while Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., got off to a strong start with 1,233 to place fourth. Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., rounds out the top five with 1,218.

All competitors will bowl 15 games of qualifying over three days before the field is cut to the top 63 plus defending champion Mike Fagan of Dallas for the double-elimination match-play bracket starting Friday.

The top five players at the conclusion of the bracket competition will compete in the live two-hour championship round on ESPN.

The Masters, which features a first-place prize of $50,000, is a major event on the PBA Tour and is part of the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Bowling Tour for the third consecutive season.

All qualifying and match play rounds of the Masters are being covered live on Xtra Frame, the PBA’s online bowling channel. For subscription information, visit pba.com.
